If you own an iPhone 6 or 6+ and you’ve damaged it or had any repairs done by a third-party, definitely do not attempt any Apple updates.

According to several sources, thousands of iPhone 6 users whose phones have been damaged and/or underwent repairs by a third party are receiving an “Error 53” message attempting a software update. After receiving this error, phones refuse to fully boot and are “bricked” or dead. Unfortunately, many of those users are also reporting that Apple refuses to help them.

So, if you have a broken iPhone 6 or 6+ and are considering a repair, or even a simple software update, I urge you to call Apple support and get their assurance that your phone will survive.
