Google announced today that it will be completely removing Flash content and Flash based Ads, replacing them with HTML5 versions. no-more-flash

Starting June 30th of this year, ad agencies will no longer be able to submit any ads built with Flash to Google AdWords. Full compliance will need to be in-place by January 2nd of 2017, the date by which Google is planning on ceasing all Flash compatibility.

I’m sure for nearly all of us, this announcement is met with great applause. Flash has been losing popularity for nearly a decade due to its constant security vulnerabilities, and the overall annoyance of maintaining yet another plugin that begs for updates nearly non-stop. In more recent years, the overall market has been shifting away from Flash in favor of the newer, less-cumbersome HTML5 capabilities.

Google has had a major role in helping to end the era of Flash once and for all. In early 2015, YouTube replaced Flash with HTML5 for streaming all of its video content, and shortly after, YouTube started the process of auto-converting Flash ads into HTML5 ads.

Hopefully, with today’s announcement, it won’t just be another nail in the Flash coffin, so to speak, but rather a shovel of dirt on top.
